About SecureStack C2 Switch Operation in a Stack
TheSecureStackC2productsarestackableswitchesthatcanbeadaptedandscaledto
helpmeetyournetworkneeds.Theseswitchesprovideamanagementplatformand
uplinktoanetworkbackboneforastackedgroupofuptoeightSecureStackswitches.
Onceinstalledinastack,theswitchesbehaveandperform
asasingleswitch.Assuch,you
canstartwithasingleswitchandaddmoreswitchesasyournetworkexpands.Youcan
alsomixdifferentproductsinthefamilyinasinglestacktoprovideadesired
combinationofporttypesandfunctionstomatchtherequirementsofindividual
applications.Inallcases,astackofswitchesperformsasonelargeproduct,andis
managedasasinglenetworkentity.
Whenswitchesareinstalledandconnectedasdescribedbackin“ConnectingHigh‐Speed
StackingCables”onpage 3‐9,thefollowingoccursduringinitialization:
•Theswitchthatwillmanagethestack
isautomati callyestablishedandisreferredtoas
theManagerswitch.
•AllotherswitchesareestablishedasMemberswitchesinthestack.
•Thehierarchyoftheswitchesthatwillassumethefunctionofbackupmanagerisalso
determinedincasethecurrentmanagermalfunctions,ispowereddown,oris
disconnectedfrom
thestack.
•Theconsoleportonthemanagerswitchremainsactiveforout‐of‐band(local)switch
management,buttheconsoleportoneachmemberswitchisdeactivated.Thisenables
youtosettheIPaddressandsystempasswordusingasingleconsoleport.Noweach
switchcanbeconfigured
locallyusingonlythemanager’sconsoleport,orinband
usingaremotedeviceandtheCLIsetofcommandsdescribedinthissection.For
proceduresusedforvarioustypesofconnectionstotheConsoleport,referto
“ConnectingtoConsolePortforLocalManagement”onpage 3‐16.
Onceastack
iscreated(morethanoneswitchisinterconnected),thefollowingoccurs:
1. Switch(unit)IDsarearbitrarilyassignedonafirst‐come,first‐servedbasis.
2. SwitchIDsaresavedagainsteachmodule.Then,everytimeaboardispower‐cycled,
itwillinitializewiththesameswitchID.Thisisimportantforport
‐specific
information(forexample:ge.4.12isthe12thGigabitEthernetportonswitch#4).
3. Themanagementelectionprocessusesthefollowingprecedencetoassigna
managementdevice:
a. Previouslyassigned/electedmanagementswitch
b. Managementassignedpriority(values1‐15)
c. Hardwarepreferencelevel
d. HighestMACAddress
